DANGER - The GOP tries to spin away the loss in Virginia

Danger Will Robinson Danger
The GOP right-wing is delusional as they try and explain
away their loss in the Virginia Governor's race
to pro-Obamacare candidates.

A 2014 Wake-up Call  -  The GOP is in serious danger.  The Right miscalculated that Obamacare would magically win elections for them.  So the Virginia GOP nominated strong cultural Conservative candidates that did not play well with the voters.

With the election of a Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, Republicans have lost seven of the past eight statewide, top-of-the-ballot races, including those for Governor, Senator and President reports the New York Times.

Republican Ken Cuccinelli was far behind in 29 polls in a row.  The voters were never happy with the GOP nominee.

But yesterday Rush Limbaugh and other right-wingers ignored the culture issue and were trying to spin the defeat in Virginia as the fault of those "evil" establishment Republicans.  Never mind that the Republican Governor's Association alone poured nearly $8 million into the race.  But it is traditional to blame the other guy for your troubles.

Sorry, but Rush's thinking is delusional.  At the peak of Obamacare madness on every news show the GOP took it in the shorts based on the candidates the party nominated.  No more, no less.

Did Rush and company think the socialist Democrats were just going to roll over in fear of an Obamacare voter reaction?  No it does not work that way.  The Commies fundraised like crazy and campaigned viciously against the GOP candidates.

The GOP candidate for Governor went down by about 2.5 points and the candidate for Lt. Governor went down by almost 11 points. . . . both were defeated by pro-Obamacare candidates.

But of interest is the race for Attorney General where not that much money was spent.  The race was a tie (see below) and again there was not an anti-Obamacare reaction by the voters that the Tea Party Conservatives hoped for.

A 2014 Wakeup call
Pro-Obamacare candidates ran strongly in
statewide Virginia races.

Recount in the Virginia Attorney's General's Race

Down ticket voting where not as much money is spent helps show what the people are thinking.  With all the anti-Obamacare, anti-Democrat healthcare news the voters split 50-50.  That split should be a wakeup call to the GOP.

Mark Herring (D)    1,099,136     50.0%

The Virginia attorney general’s race is headed for a recount, and the deadlocked contest is likely to be all but frozen in place until Nov. 25, the earliest date when a new tally can be formally requested, state election officials said Wednesday.

As of noon Wednesday, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, state Sen. Mark D. Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) was clinging to a 481-vote lead over state Sen. Mark Herring (D-Loudoun), with 2.2 million ballots cast, according to unofficial figures from the Virginia State Board of Elections.

Local election boards on Wednesday will begin examining “provisional” ballots — cast by voters who did not present legally acceptable ID or who may have come to the wrong polling place Tuesday. The boards must finish certifying their counts by Nov. 12 reports the Washington Post.

The State Board of Elections is scheduled to certify the entire count Nov. 25. Only then can the trailing candidate ask for a recount, according to board spokeswoman Nikki Sheridan.

A Republican Collapse
Republican Earl Walker Jackson, Sr. (above) lost the Virginia Lt. Governor's race in an almost 11 point landslide.  Jackson is a good man and a patriot, but facts is facts.  When given the opportunity to support an anti-Obamacare cultural Conservative the voters of Virginia went Democrat.
.
Ralph Northam (D)      1,208,198      55.3%
E.W. Jackson (R)            975,660      44.7%
.
Like my Mama used to say, "It is what it is."  The Rush Limbaugh talking heads can try to spin this, but here at the peak of Obamacare madness and press coverage an anti-Obamacare candidate was soundly defeated.
.
What message does this send for the 2014 elections?

Rush Spins a Defeat
Rush got the anti-gay rights cultural Conservative and intensely anti-Obamacare candidates he wanted.  The voters said no.  We want the pro-Obamacare candidates.
.
Nimble as ever, Rush tried to pass the blame from his candidates over to the "evil" establishment GOP.  The Republican for Governor alone spend over $18 million not counting spending from other pro-GOP groups.  But the Democrat was the better candidate raising some $54 million.

By comparison, Republican Bob McDonnell had raised $21 million at this time in the 2009 race while Democrat Creigh Deeds had collected $16 million.  (McDonnell won with 59 percent.) McAuliffe’s almost two-to-one fundraising lead translates into one very important thing: lots and lots more ads.
