Greenwald to publish Snowden leaks on France, Spain

Brazil-based US reporter Glenn Greenwald said Wednesday he would publish documents from intelligence leaker Edward Snowden focused on France and Spain.

Greenwald, a Rio-based correspondent for Britain's Guardian newspaper, also said that if Brazil wanted more data on alleged US snooping into its affairs it should offer Snowden asylum.

Snowden, a former US spy agency contractor wanted by Washington, is currently at an unknown location in Russia after Moscow granted him temporary asylum reports Agence France-Presse News.

Brazil did not respond to a Snowden request for asylum as he sought refuge following his first explosive disclosures detailing the US government's digital dragnet.

Testifying before a Brazilian congressional panel, Greenwald accused Washington and its allies of waging a "war against journalism and the process of transparency."

"I am learning now that the United States is using this surveillance system to punish the journalistic process," said Greenwald, who, without elaborating, added he was working on material relating to France and Spain.

"We are undertaking high-risk journalism. We shall continue doing so until we publish the last document I have," Greenwald told senators investigating allegations that Washington spied on Brasilia.

"I am not holding onto relevant documents nor hiding information. All that I had regarding surveillance against Brazil, and now France -- I am working with French and Spanish newspapers -- I publish. I don't hold onto it," he said in Portuguese.

Greenwald said governments, including Brazil's, appeared to be grateful for the disclosure of alleged US spying on them "but they are not disposed to protect the person who passes on the data."

"If the government wants information it should protect him so he is at liberty to work," Greenwald said.

"He has very limited scope to speak and runs the risk of the United States capturing him."

When he testified before the Brazilian Senate's foreign relations committee in August, Greenwald said he had personally received thousands of documents from Snowden while in Hong Kong with the fugitive.

On Wednesday, as Brazil announced it would host an Internet governance summit next year, Greenwald said: "Every time I found a document I thought ought to be published I immediately started working on it as quickly as possible to inform the public."

He added he was in almost daily contact with Snowden.

The documents released so far appear to show that the US National Security Agency intercepted Brazilian government communications, those of state-run energy giant Petrobras, as well as phone calls and emails of millions of Brazilians.

The disclosures led Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to slam the United States in an address to the United Nations last month and scrap a planned state visit to Washington.

Citing evidence that even messages from her own office were monitored, Rousseff called the alleged spying a violation of international law.

The row deepened with allegations Sunday that Canada, a very close US ally, also spied on Brazil's energy ministry.

Canada has mining interests in this huge, resource-rich Latin American country.

Now the Socialists are striking back against the will of the people.  The Greek Elites have ordered the arrest of four Members of Parliament from the anti-immigration Golden Dawn Party and had them brought to court in Athens to face charges of criminal activity amid a clampdown on the party.

Golden Dawn - which won nearly 7% of the vote in 2012 elections - threatened to pull its 18 MPs out of the 300-strong parliament.

The governing coalition headed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, which has 155 seats, would then face by-elections.

The socialist Greek government is determined to purge its police force of any links with Golden Dawn, the minister for public order said Sunday, after the arrest of officers with ties to the neo-Nazi party.

Nikos Dendias said there should be "a total catharsis so that there is nothing suspicious that could cast a shadow on the majority of police officers, who are honest," in an interview with Greek daily Kathimerini.

Dendias admitted that there were "corrupt officers who had collaborated with Golden Dawn", which he labelled "a criminal organization" reports France 24 News.

Four police officers have been arrested over their links to the far-right party, whose leader was indicted this week along with five others for taking part in a criminal organisation following the murder of an anti-fascist musician last month.

Among the officers arrested are a former police chief of the Agios Panteleimon neighbourhood of central Athens -- the scene of multiple attacks by neo-Nazis on immigrants in recent years -- on charges of abuse of power and arms trafficking, and an officer at the Piraeus port near the capital charged with belonging to a criminal organization.

Women who wear perfume are "fornicators" says Muslim cleric

Muslim says "fornication" like it's a bad thing.

A woman should be in total submission to her husband.

Public prosecutors in Spain have dropped charges of "advocating gender violence" against a Muslim cleric who, on April 2013, preached a two-hour sermon in Spanish, entitled "The Queens of Islam."

During the sermon he made a number of pronouncements about the role of women in Spanish society, including: "Any woman who wears perfume and leaves the house and walks past men who can smell her perfume is a fornicator, and every glance she gets is a fornication."

Malik Ibn Benaisa, the cleric, had been charged with “advocating gender violence” because of his sermon, but those charges have been dropped. The district attorney for the case said “in relation to domestic violence, the law refers to concrete action in the form of threats, injuries, coercion or abuse, while the sexual or religious discrimination section of Article 510 of the Penal Code refers to encouraging discrimination, hatred or violence. This did not occur at the conference in question.”

Benaisa may not have advocated violence, but he certainly advocated discrimination.

“A woman cannot show her face or bare hands, she cannot wear high heeled shoes, she cannot wear blue jeans, she must wear a scarf to cover her chest, she cannot pluck her eyebrows and she cannot wear perfume because if she uses it she becomes a fornicator,” Benaisa said during his sermon. “A woman must keep her head down because a jealous husband can cause problems with other men. A woman should be in total submission to her husband. She has an obligation to wear the veil.”

The case involves Malik Ibn Benaisa, a Muslim imam based in Ceuta, a Spanish exclave in North Africa where Muslims constitute about 50% of the total population.

Benaisa also said that women should be banned from wearing blue jeans and high heels and from leaving the house unless their hands and face are completely covered.

The comments, which were aired on Spanish public television, enraged women's rights activists and triggered a nationwide debate over when religious speech becomes abusive and crosses the line into "sexual discrimination" and "gender violence."
