Drivers along a busy North Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood.

It was part of a government research "study" aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.

"It just doesn't seem right that you can be forced off the road when you're not doing anything wrong," said Kim Cope, who said she was on her lunch break when she was forced to pull over at the roadblock on Beach Street reports NBC News Dallas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is spending $7.9 million on the survey over three years, said participation was "100 percent voluntary" and anonymous.

But Cope said it didn't feel voluntary to her -- despite signs saying it was.

"I gestured to the guy in front that I just wanted to go straight, but he wouldn't let me and forced me into a parking spot," she said.

Once parked, she couldn't believe what she was asked next.

"They were asking for cheek swabs," she said. "They would give $10 for that. Also, if you let them take your blood, they would pay you $50 for that."

At the very least, she said, they wanted to test her breath for alcohol.

She said she felt trapped.

"I finally did the Breathalyzer test just because I thought that would be the easiest way to leave," she said, adding she received no money.

Fort Worth police Sgt. Kelly Peel said he could not immediately locate any record of Fort Worth officers being involved in the roadblock but said he was still checking Monday evening.

A spokesman for nearby Haltom City police said his department was not involved.

NBC DFW confirmed that the survey was done by a government contractor, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, which is based in Calverton, Md.

A company spokeswoman referred questions to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An agency spokeswoman sent an email confirming the government is conducting the surveys in 30 cities across the country in an effort to reduce impaired-driving accidents.

 

She did not respond to another email from NBC DFW asking specific questions about the program..

But a Fort Worth attorney who is an expert in civil liberties law questioned whether such stops are constitutional.

"You can't just be pulled over randomly or for no reason," said attorney Frank Colosi.

He also noted the fine print on a form given to drivers informs them their breath was tested by "passive alcohol sensor readings before the consent process has been completed."

"They're essentially lying to you when they say it's completely voluntary, because they're testing you at that moment," Colosi said.

He also questioned the results of the "voluntary" survey -- speculating that drivers who had been drinking or using drugs would be more inclined to simply decline to participate.

Cope said she is troubled by what happened.

"It just doesn't seem right that they should be able to do any of it," she said. "If it's voluntary, it's voluntary, and none of it felt voluntary."

(UPDATE  -  Following a privacy outcry concerning a wi-fi “mesh network” being installed, the Seattle Police Department announced last night that it is temporarily deactivating the network.)


Police State  -  The Seattle Police have installed a network of 160 wireless "white box" access points that are mounted on poles across the city.  Every time a cell phone or other device looks for a Wi-Fi signal the white box recognizes it and stores that data for future use.  The network can record the last 1,000 locations of a person using their cellphone’s MAC address.

The network was bought with a Department of Homeland Security grant for $2.6 million reports KIRO 7 TV News.

This is a system that could lead to the permanent tracking of an entire city’s population.



"They now own a piece of equipment that has tracking capabilities so we think that they should be going to City Council and presenting a protocol for the whole network that says they won't be using it for surveillance purposes," said Jamela Debelak of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"We believe that people should be free to move about without having the government track their movements unless there really is reason to believe they're engaged in some criminal activity," said Debelak. Seattle police could not explain why the network appears to be online.

A report by The Stranger, a weekly Seattle newspaper, exposes how the boxes, which are attached to utility poles and include vertical antennae, can track cellphones even if they are not connected to the system’s wi-fi network.

 

Aruba – the company that provided the boxes to the Seattle Police Department – brags in its technical literature about how the boxes can keep track of “rogue” or “unassociated” devices, in other words your cellphone even if you have refused to let the system access your device’s wi-fi component.

The user’s guide for one of Aruba’s recent software products states: “The wireless network has a wealth of information about unassociated and associated devices.” That software includes “a location engine that calculates associated and unassociated device location every 30 seconds by default… The last 1,000 historical locations are stored for each MAC address.”

When reporters Matt Fikse-Verkerk and Brendan Kiley asked the Seattle Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security to explain what the boxes were for, the DHS refused to comment and Seattle Police detective Monty Moss would only state that the department “is not comfortable answering policy questions when we do not yet have a policy.”

According to U.S. Army Japan, Col. Eric Tilley was suspended from his job by Maj. Gen. James C. Boozer Sr., commander of U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward) for a “lack of confidence” based on the results of an inquiry.

A spokesman for U.S. Army Japan, Maj. Kevin Toner, would not elaborate on what prompted a “lack of confidence,” saying it would be “inappropriate to make public the allegations because the investigation did not lead to findings of criminal misconduct.”

Tilley is to be replaced by Col. Joy Curriera.

Tilley’s dismissal is only the latest in what retired Navy Capt. Joseph John refers to as a “bigger picture” in which some “135 senior officers have been purged.”

“The ‘bigger picture,’” John told WND, “is that the U.S. Armed Forces have been under relentless attack by the occupant of the Oval Office for five years.”

A Naval Academy graduate, John had three tours of duty in Vietnam, served as an al-Qaida expert for the FBI, and was a commanding officer with SEALs embedded on special operations. He was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, five Meritorious Service Medals and 22 medals and unit citations for combat operations in Vietnam, Philippines, Desert Storm and on anti-terrorist operations.

• The Feds give warrantless, illegally-collected information to local law-enforcement agencies.

(Tenth Amendment Center)  -  In the midst of the never-ending NSA spying revelations, it is easy to lose track of all of the unconstitutional acts committed by the so-called intelligence community – and the ways that NSA spying, and mentality behind it, permeates law enforcement at all levels.

One  troubling aspect recently revealed is the fact that the feds give warrantless, illegally-collected information to local law-enforcement agencies for their investigations. This is done through something called “Special Operations Division,” and through Fusion Centers.

The Fusion Centers act as a conduit for Big Brother – they’re a place to simply receive data collected, with or without a warrant, by federal agencies like the NSA.  That information is passed on to local law enforcement and often used in day-to-day criminal investigations.

Fusion Centers were set-up under the "small government" Bush Administration to “help keep America safe” after 9/11. The Patriot Act removed barriers that prevented the feds from sharing intelligence information with local law enforcement. This was meant to facilitate communication between agencies so decisions could be made quickly in order to “prevent another terrorist attack.”  At least that’s how it was sold. Unfortunately, this practice has been abused and focused on the whole American population – not just terror suspects.

Given the penchant the feds have for using their power to harass political opponents, these spying programs have a pernicious chilling effect on the First Amendment of the Constitution..
These changes in the law have fostered a predatory atmosphere within the system.  Collusion between the feds, private entities, state and local governments and foreign governments has greatly increased since The Information Sharing Environment (ISE) was established in 2004.

According to its website, the ISE “provides analysts, operators, and investigators with information needed to enhance national security. These analysts, operators, and investigators… have mission needs to collaborate and share information with each other and with private sector partners and our foreign allies.”

The ISE and its members, including the Department of Defense and the Director of National Intelligence (who the NSA reports to), have created a bonanza in unconstitutional behavior with public and private interests invited to run amok on the privacy rights of citizens.

According to ISE, Fusion Centers are responsible for doing the feds’ dirty work at the state and local levels. The NSA and other federal agencies send down “threat assessments” that are analyzed by the Fusion Centers.  Then these are passed on to local and state law enforcement officers and other government officials.

The Fusion Centers play a big role in spreading the NSA’s culture of suspicion into our local communities. Think of them as the hand-off point for the federal spies working with your local police.

Make no mistake about it, these Fusion Centers are openly hostile toward liberty.

A Missouri Fusion Center issued a report classifying “supporters of the Constitution” as potential terrorists and extremists in the same vein as the Ku Klux Klan. They have undoubtedly focused their attention on left-leaning activists as well, particularly the anti-war movement.

In addition to helping the feds demonize their political opposition, Fusion Centers also help them illegally spy on Americans.

The existence of Fusion Centers in virtually every state across the country highlights how deep into our communities Big Brother has infiltrated. The spin insisting that only terrorists and people with something to hide should fear government surveillance is revealed as more blatantly untrue as NSA spying revelations mount. They are prying into the private lives of everyone.

The fusion centers insist that they’re only snooping on people with anti-government beliefs. But with Congress less popular than a root canal and resentment toward public officials at an all-time high among Americans, those comments cannot be seen as anything more than an admission of guilt.



A strategy to take on Big Brother cannot neglect these fusion centers. According to the FAQ section of the Alabama Fusion Center website, they ‘are funded through state or local budgets and federal grants.’ This means it is possible for us to pass bills in state and local governments that make it much more difficult for the Fusion Centers to receive the funding they need to snoop on us and disseminate vile propaganda.

Of course, sycophants are going to whine endlessly about how we desperately need the Fusion Centers to spy on us, and how they’re providing such a crucial function in keeping us safe from the terrorists. However, the evidence suggests otherwise.

According to a study conducted by the the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations from 2009-2010, they “could identify no reporting which uncovered a terrorist threat, nor could it identify a contribution such fusion center reporting made to disrupt an active terrorist plot.” Not one instance of success despite the Department of Homeland Security spending up to $1.4 billion on them. In addition, embarrassing reports such as this instance of Fusion Center personnel spending $75,000 on big screen televisions have surfaced, raising questions about the efficacy of the invasive program.

We need to capitalize on Big Brother’s ineptitude and let people know exactly how their money is being squandered. While we can’t stop the DHS from funding these Fusion Centers, we can stop our state and local governments from supporting these inefficient, ineffective, liberty-destroying menaces! Big Brother has many tentacles, and we must focus on stopping them all if we are to defeat it.

Passage of the 4th Amendment Protection Act in your state would be a huge step towards stopping the effects of NSA spying and the culture of suspicion it has created at every level of government.

By banning your state from cooperating with warrantless snooping, or even accepting “evidence” from federal agencies like the NSA that is collected without a warrant, we can begin the process of healing, and restoring a culture of liberty.

It appears nukes may have gone "missing" and top commanders in charge of nuclear weapons are being fired by Comrade Obama . . . and if you hear anything about this at all in the major media it is nothing more that a regurgitation of Pentagon CYA press releases.

Another U.S. military officer with high-level oversight responsibility for the nation's nuclear arsenal has lost his job - the second in the past week.

Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, the two-star general in charge of three Air Force nuclear wings, was "relieved" of command "due to a loss of trust and confidence in his leadership and judgment," the Air Force said in a statement on Friday.

Carey was fired by his boss Lt. Gen James Kowalski, head of the Air Force's Global Strike Command, several months after Kowalski requested an inspector general investigation reports CNN.

Brig. Gen. Les Kodlick, the chief spokesman for the Air Force, told reporters the inspector general's office began its investigation after multiple "reports of misbehavior" but declined to be specific.

In a separate case, Vice Adm. Tim Giardina was formally relieved of his duties earlier this week as deputy chief of U.S. Strategic Command, according to Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy's chief of information.

Giardina oversaw nuclear weapons forces. A military official said his demotion was connected to allegations that he used counterfeit gambling chips at an Iowa casino.

Top radio host Dr. Michael Savage has joined in calling for answers regarding the leaked secret transfer of nuclear weapons to South Carolina that was followed by both warnings of a nuclear strike by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and the termination of the top two US nuke commanders.

Originally reported by myself and Alex Jones back on September 3rd, a number of disturbing red flags have continued to give further evidence to the high level military intelligence source that initially exposed the transfer of the off-the-record nuclear warheads from Dyess Air Force base to South Carolina — and still, the irrelevant mega media has ultimately failed to even investigate reports Infowars News.

Once again, the real media continues to dominate along with investigative radio personalities in reporting on the news that matters.

As Savage points out, specifically speaking on my report last Friday concerning how the termination of a high level nuke commander coincided with the exact September 3rd date of the secret transfer, what we truly need is answers. And while we are already talking about an issue that is deeply concerning at a base level, what really give the secret transfer a disturbing amount of depth are the events that followed the leaked intel.

It was Senator Lindsey Graham who came out later on the same day in warning against a ‘nuclear attack’ in South Carolina if we did not take military action in Syria. Then we also consider the fact that two of the top nuke commanders in the United States were terminated for laughable reasons, and it becomes an even larger red flag scenario. What is most amazing to me, however, is the fact that the termination of the commanders was actually leaked to the Associated Press and others.

What this means is that United States government did not want us to know that the commanders were terminated — specifically that the second top commander was fired on the same day as the secret nuke transfer report.

When we look back at the ’2007 United States Air Force nuclear weapons incident’, where nukes were reported missing from the Minot Air Force Base with no official suspect, the media went into turmoil and investigations were launched immediately. Even CNN covered the event in depth and continued to investigate what was going on. The CNN reporter even stated that “this kind of thing is not supposed to happen” in response to the event.

Should the government enforce the mandatory use of helmets while walking? 14 out of 20 people we asked at the University of Texas supported the draconian measure, emphasizing once again how the majority of the general public will accept almost any nanny state measure no matter how ludicrous.

The petition was entitled “Compelled Helmet Use for Misfortunate Public’ (CHUMP), and called for the City of Austin to enforce mandatory helmet usage for all citizens in addition to the creation of special walking lanes where people could walk obliviously while texting on their cellphones.

 

Most of the individuals who signed the petition had it explained to them very clearly. Some signed straight away, while others took a little convincing but happily put pen to paper reports Infowars News.

 

One woman was told that the petition was to “get people to wear helmets while they’re walking,” to which she responded “oh perfect, yeah, that’s great,” and immediately signed the petition.

 

When another man indicated his willingness to sign the petition, a woman responded, “You wanna make everybody wear helmets?,” to which he responded, “these dummies need to wear helmets.”

 

“It will help keep insurance costs down,” another woman is told as she signs the petition.

 

“We have socialized healthcare now, so everyone’s responsible for everyone,” another couple were told.

 

After being told that schools are now banning dodgeball and other contact sports, another woman agreed to sign, remarking that enforcing helmet use, “Makes sense technically.”

“Of course, tickets for anyone without helmets, God speed, we can do it,” comments another trendy after signing the petition.

 

The notion that authorities would seek to mandate some form of control measure to make walking safer is by no means a stretch.

 

Fort Lee, New Jersey is already ticketing people who write text messages while crossing the street, slapping them with $85 dollar fines.

 

Schools are also banning footballs, baseballs, lacrosse balls or “anything that might hurt” someone on school grounds. At one Long Island middle school, games of tag and cartwheels were also banned.

 

This video once again highlights how many members of the public are so indoctrinated that they will go along with any control freak measure no matter how inane and draconian it may be.

 

Earlier this year, numerous Austin residents also signed a petition to ban water.

 

The zombie plague isn’t confined just to Austin either. As Mark Dice has documented, residents of San Diego have thrown their support behind numerous ludicrous measures, including making infanticide a part of Obamacare and adding birth control drugs to the water supply.

while armed rangers stayed at the door.

The American Police State  -  Pat Vaillancourt went on a trip last week that was intended to showcase some of America’s greatest treasures.

Instead, the Salisbury resident said she and others on her tour bus witnessed an ugly spectacle that made her embarrassed, angry and heartbroken for her country.

Vaillancourt was one of thousands of people who found themselves in a national park as the federal government shutdown went into effect on Oct. 1. For many hours her tour group, which included senior citizen visitors from Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States, were locked in a Yellowstone National Park hotel under armed guard reports the Eagle Tribune.

The tourists were treated harshly by armed park employees, she said, so much so that some of the foreign tourists with limited English skills thought they were under arrest.

When finally allowed to leave, the bus was not allowed to halt at all along the 2.5-hour trip out of the park, not even to stop at private bathrooms that were open along the route.

“We’ve become a country of fear, guns and control,” said Vaillancourt, who grew up in Lawrence. “It was like they brought out the armed forces. Nobody was saying, ‘we’re sorry,’ it was all like — ” as she clenched her fist and banged it against her forearm.

Vaillancourt took part in a nine-day tour of western parks and sites along with about four dozen senior citizen tourists. One of the highlights of the tour was to be Yellowstone, where they arrived just as the shutdown went into effect.

Rangers systematically sent visitors out of the park, though some groups that had hotel reservations — such as Vaillancourt’s — were allowed to stay for two days. Those two days started out on a sour note, she said.

The bus stopped along a road when a large herd of bison passed nearby, and seniors filed out to take photos. Almost immediately, an armed ranger came by and ordered them to get back in, saying they couldn’t “recreate.”

The tour guide, who had paid a $300 fee the day before to bring the group into the park, argued that the seniors weren’t “recreating,” just taking photos.

“She responded and said, ‘Sir, you are recreating,’ and her tone became very aggressive,” Vaillancourt said.

The seniors quickly filed back on board and the bus went to the Old Faithful Inn, the park’s premier lodge located adjacent to the park’s most famous site, Old Faithful geyser. That was as close as they could get to the famous site — barricades were erected around Old Faithful, and the seniors were locked inside the hotel, where armed rangers stayed at the door.

So who are we really spying on?  If we are not watching terrorists, then a process of elimination says we are spying on the average American and building files on their friends, emails, politics, text messages, weapons and interests.

U.S. officials refused to answer lawmakers’ questions in public on Thursday about the full scope of the National Security Agency’s collection of Americans’ data, including whether it has ever sought to acquire large volumes of cellphone location information or other records.

NSA Director Keith Alexander dodged questions by a senior member of the Senate Intelligence Committee about whether the agency has ever tried to augment its broad collection of virtually all Americans’ phone-call records by gathering data that would indicate the callers’ locations. He noted that intelligence officials had given a classified answer to the question reports the Washington Post.

“Is it the goal of the NSA to collect the phone records of all Americans?” Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) asked.

“I believe it is in the nation’s best interests to put all the phone records into a lockbox that we could search when the nation needs to do it, yes,” Alexander said.

Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Udall and other lawmakers have introduced reform legislation that would, among other things, end the phone records collection, while allowing for a more limited program.

On Thursday, Wyden accused U.S. officials of not being more forthcoming about intelligence-collection programs.

“The leadership of your agencies built an intelligence-collection system that repeatedly deceived the American people,” he said. “Time and time again, the American people were told one thing about domestic surveillance in public forums while government agencies did something else in private.”

At the start of the hearing, the Democratic chair of the committee, Diane Feinstein, outlined a separate bill she is introducing with Republican vice-chairman Saxby Chambliss.

Their proposed legislation broadly echoes the small tweaks the intelligence establishment says it will consider, but does not go further.

Republican Senator Chambliss defended the unconstitutional spying and said that "while we are here in large part because of the Snowden leaks", they had caused huge damage to the US and its interests and "would ultimately claim lives", something he said Snowden should be held to account for.

The Feinstein-Chambliss bill would also widen the powers of the NSA, allowing laws that authorise foreign spying to be continued for a period of time after targets enter the United States.  Never mind that the 4th Amendment requires a search warrant.

Other senators on the committee criticised media reporting and argued the essence of the surveillance apparatus should be left in place. Republican Senator Dan Coats said journalists were throwing "raw meat out there", suggesting the reporting was misleading the public. He cautioned against overreacting "for fear of the public saying, 'Oh, that headline makes me nervous,'" reports the UK Guardian.

Democrat Jay Rockefeller said that public "misunderstandings" of the unconstitutional spying risked dismantling a system of surveillance that has taken a decade to construct in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. "You don't build a Roman fort and then build another one next door because you've made a mistake," he said.

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden who, as a member of the committee, has for years been privy to classified briefings that he cannot discuss in public. "You talk about the damage that has been done by disclosures, but any government official who thought this would never be disclosed was ignoring history. The truth always manages to come out," he said.

A Pennsylvania mining company sued by the federal government on behalf of a worker who refused a biometric handscan because he believes in the Bible's mark of the beast prophecy, said on Thursday that it supports religious freedom.

The Federal Equal Opportunity Employment Commission filed a lawsuit against Consul Energy Inc, stating that Beverly Butcher Jr. had worked at the company's coal mine in Mannington, West Virginia, for more than 35 years, until he was required to use a biometric hand scanner to track his hours.

Consul, with headquarters in Western Pennsylvania, was accused of discriminating against Butcher, who repeatedly told mining officials that using the scanner violated his Evangelical Christian beliefs, given his view of the relationship between hand-scanning technology and the mark of the beast in the New Testament's Book of Revelation, the lawsuit said reports Reuters News.

According to the Christian Bible, the mark is implanted on the forehead or right hand and symbolizes allegiance to the antichrist.

Though alternatives to hand scans were found for two employees with missing fingers, the EEOC claims Butcher was forced into early retirement because no provision was made for him.

"The focus is on whether the employer can provide an accommodation without incurring an undue hardship," Philadelphia EEOC regional attorney Debra Lawrence said in a statement.

The company on Thursday declined to comment on the lawsuit but said it did its best to accommodate religious beliefs.

"In appropriate cases we make reasonable accommodations to address any conflict with sincerely held religious beliefs," said company spokeswoman Lynn Seay in a statement.

EEOC District Director Spencer Lewis, Jr. said the company violated Butcher's civil rights when "they obstinately refused to consider easy alternatives to their new hand-scanning time and attendance system to accommodate Mr. Butcher's religious beliefs."

Neither Butcher, whose age was not immediately known, nor EEOC officials were available for further comment.
